I have bought too many books because the cover was good, the blurb was tight, and the first chapter turned out to be a slog. Uncovered solves exactly this problem by removing everything except the writing.
You open the site, and you get the first page of a real book. No cover, no title, no author name. Just text. If it grabs you, you read on. If it does not, you swipe to the next. Only after you decide do you reveal what the book was.
Reading blind changes the calculation. Without a cover signaling genre or a blurb selling the premise, you react to the prose itself. I found myself engaged by openings I would have scrolled past on a bookstore table, and bored by openings from authors I normally like. The blind format exposes how much of book buying is habit, not taste.
Over 1,500 openings across every genre. Literary fiction, thrillers, romance, fantasy, sci-fi. The selection is curated for strong writing, not popularity. Nothing is paid or sponsored. No publisher can buy a placement. That constraint is what keeps the feed honest.
The reveal is the payoff. After you read and decide, you tap to uncover the book. Seeing the cover and title after the fact, when you already know whether the writing works for you, reframes how you look at jacket design. Some of my favorite discoveries were books with covers I would have walked past.
No account to start, email to save. The site works instantly. Start reading in one click. If you want to keep your shelf of saved books across sessions, you optionally add your email. That is it. One email a week with new openings matched to what you saved.
Links to bookshops, not just warehouses. Every reveal links to Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores, or your local library. The site was built by Nathaniel Peters as an honest alternative to algorithm-driven discovery, and the ethos carries through to where it sends you to buy.
What to know
Uncovered is not a recommendation engine. There are no ratings, no reviews, no social feed. It is just openings and your reaction. That simplicity is the point. For the authors who prefer not to have excerpts shown, the site removes them within 24 hours on request.
Worth your time if
You are tired of buying books that look great and read flat, or you want to discover writers you would never find through bestseller lists.
